The tradition of blessing houses on Epiphany continues with FELC staff coming to your house this year. Staff members will stop by at your request to say a prayer of blessing and chalk the top of your front door with “20 + CMB + 21,” all done with safe distancing outside and with masks, of course.
The feast of Epiphany (“manifestation”) on January 6 concludes the twelve-day Christmas season. It is a celebration of God’s glory revealed in the person of Jesus Christ. Like the light of the star that guided the magi to Jesus, the light of Christ reveals who we are: children of God who are claimed in love. We are invited to be beacons of the light, sharing love with all people.
The tradition of house blessings at Epiphany recalls the visit of the Magi, or Three Kings, to the home of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. “CMB” stands for Christus mansionem benedicat (Christ bless this house). It also represents the legendary names of the three kings: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.
